Due to the ever-growing cybersecurity threat, U.S. Rep. Michael Rogers, along with 113 co-sponsors, has introduced the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), a bill that will expand the U.S. government's resources and legal authority in its fight to protect the stability and security of its networks.

The bill, an amendment to the National Security Act of 1947, removes cumbersome legal restrictions on government surveillance, and provides many essential federal bureaucracies, such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Webcomic Police, with an unprecedented level of access to Internet users' private communications and information. It is currently highly illegal for corporations to share this sensitive material, but these restrictions will now no longer apply when cybersecurity is at risk, granting corporations legal immunity when sharing private information with the federal government and other companies.

CISPA will grant government entities like the Webcomic Police unlimited access to read e-mails and text messages sent by individuals considered to be associated with the cybersecurity threat. Private entities such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter will be allowed to modify or block communications made by potentially subversive individuals, and Internet service providers will be able to block access to websites considered to be related to the cyber threat. This bill will also give the Department of Homeland Security, the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Webcomic Police, and other intelligence agencies full access to Internet users' credit card information, website browsing history, online purchase records, library records, and telephone communications.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on CISPA a few days from now. When this legislation passes, it will be a major victory for the Webcomic Police and our ongoing effort to turn the Internet into the largest and most comprehensive surveillance and control mechanism in human history.
